Abstract: Aim. To present a literature review on pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of eosinophilic esophagitis (EE). Methods. Eosinophilic esophagitis is a chronic immune-mediated infl ammatory disease of the esophagus. Diagnosis of EE is based on the characteristic clinical presentation of esophageal dysfunction (dysphagia) in combination with the detection of eosinophilic infi ltration of the esophageal mucosa by histological examination. Basic therapy of eosinophilic esophagitis includes dietary restrictions, the use of proton pump inhibitors and topical corticosteroids.
